A Prayer for National Election

Fr. Wilfredo Samson, SJ

Dear God,

Send forth your Holy Spirit
to wake us up and to vote wisely.
This coming election is not a contest
of who’s the most popular of them all.
This is a manifestation of our freedom
to choose our leaders to shepherd us.
O Lord, teach us how to vote wisely.

Allow us to realize that the leaders
we are about to choose and vote,
will govern our country for six years.
These people are crucial in leading us
towards progress, unity, and harmony.
Deliver us from our undiscerned choices,
and guide us to vote for the right candidates.

The future of our country is in our hands,
never allow us to regret our wrong choice.
open our mind and hearts to Your will.

Give us the courage and humility
to CHANGE our mind, if our decision
is based on feelings and not facts.

Give us the courage and strength
to be FIRM and strong, if someone
wants to buy our votes or use force.

Give us the courage and humility
to RESPECT the vote of others, if their
candidates are not our choices.

Give us the desire and dedication
to SUPPORT the winners, even if
they are not our ideal leaders.

O God, DISPOSE us to choose
the right leaders who can lead
our country towards our dreams.

Allow us to remember our history,
For in the end, it is easier to choose
the right and responsible leaders now,
than to return to the streets again
for another revolution to expel
evil and corrupt leaders.
And we’re really tired of it.

O Lord, Our Beloved King,
Deliver us from wrong choices.
Deliver us from incompetent leaders.
Deliver us from people who plan to cheat.
Deliver us from any election violence.
Give us a peaceful and honest election.
Help us in our discernment …
Teach us to vote wisely.
