New San Fernando archbishop, Dipolog bishop named

San Fernando Archbishop-elect Florentino Galang Lavarias

MANILA, July 25, 2014 – His Holiness Pope Francis today named Iba Bishop Florentino Galang Lavarias as Archbishop of San Fernando (De Pampanga) today.

He succeeds Archbishop Paciano Basilio Aniceto, now 77 years old, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same archdiocese upon reaching the age limit was accepted by the Holy Father.

The new Metropolitan of San Fernando will lead the ecclesial province with a population of 3,561,000 and Catholics 3,324,000, priests 176 and religious 155.

Meanwhile, Fr. Severo C. Caermare, now 44 years old, was appointed today Bishop of Dipolog with a population of 977,000 with 787,000 Catholics, 68 priests, one permanent deacon and religious 58. The ecclesial province covers the entire Zamboanga del Norte.

He was born on October 22, 1969 in Sibutad, Zamboanga del Norte and has been a priest for over 18 years. He was ordained priest in 1996 and holds a master’s degree in Theology and pastoral ministry from the St. John Vianney theological seminary in Cagayan de Oro City.

The bishop-elect held a number of pastoral roles, from being parish administrator of Our Mother of Perpetual Help and San Isidro in Zamboanga del Norte.

He was also formator, rector, professor and liturgist at Cor Jesus Seminary of Dipolog City and later formator, professor, rector of St. Mary’s Theologate of Ozamis City. He is currently administrator of St. Anthony of Padua parish in Gulayon, Dipolog City and rector of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosaryin Dipolog City.

He succeeds Bishop Jose Ricare Manguiran, now 77 years old, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese upon reaching the age limit was accepted by the Holy Father. (Melo M. Acuna)
