Kalookan: A decade of being a diocese

Atty. Aurora A. Santiago

Duc in Altum

HAPPY 10th Anniversary to my beloved, the Diocese of Kalookan! It is also the Feast of San Roque, the Patron Saint of the Diocese, on August 16. Happy Feast Day and Happy Anniversary!

On June 28, 2003, on the 25th year of his Pontificate, Blessed John Paul II issued the Papal Bull disjoining from the Archdiocese of Manila the Kalookan City-South and the Municipalities of Malabon and Navotas (now cities), establishing the new Diocese of Kalookan.

The Papal Bull established the Parish Church of San Roque in Kalookan and elevated it to the level and dignity of a Cathedral Church, granted it all the distinctions, privileges and honor which all Cathedral Churches in the Catholic world enjoy.

On August 22, 2003, in the solemn Rites of Liturgical Reception and Canonical Possession, His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin, D.D., installed Bishop Deogracias S. Iñiguez, Jr., D.D., as the First Bishop of the new Diocese, in the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, the Archbishops and Bishops of the Roman Catholic, the Bishops of Protestant Churches, the Clergy, Religious and Catholic faithful.

The motto of the Diocese is “Duc in Altum (Lk: 5:4) or “Put out into the Deep”. These are the words spoken by the Master of the apostles as they gathered themselves before Jesus. It was discussed by Blessed John Paul II in his Apostolic Letter, Novo Millennio Ineunte.

The motto captures the spirit and direction of the Diocese. “Powered by the love of Jesus and the grace of the Holy Spirit, the Diocese of Kalookan sails forth with faith and courage accompanied by Mary to cast its net so that a bountiful harvest may be reaped for the glory of God and the salvation of the souls.

The title of this column is named after the motto of the Diocese “Duc in Altum”, and approved by the then Bishop of the Diocese, Most Rev. Deogracias S. Iñiguez, Jr., D.D.

The theme of the 10 years celebration is “Duc in Altum: A Decade of Journeying Towards the Fullness of Life”.

The happy event will be led by the Diocese’s Apostolic Administrator, His Excellency, Most Rev. Francisco “Francis” de Leon, D.D., also the Auxiliary Bishop of Antipolo.

On August 16, a Holy Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. at the San Roque Cathedral, to be presided by His Eminence, Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, D.D. and concelebrated by the bishops from the suffragan dioceses. Citations will be given to the laity who rendered exemplary service to the Church and the Diocese. The same will also be given to lay organizations.

On August 31, on the occasion of the 6th Episcopal Anniversary of Bishop Francis (actually September 01), a Holy Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. at the San Roque Cathedral to be presided by Bishop Francis and concelebrated by the Diocesan and religious clergy.

In the evening, a joint celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Diocese and the 6th Episcopal Anniversary of Bishop Francis will be held at the Manila Hotel. Citations will be awarded to the clergy.

Invited to both occasions are the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, His Grace Giuseppe Pinto; His Eminence Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Archbishops, Bishops, clergy, the religious and the laity.

It is indeed very significant that on its 10th year as a Diocese, 5 Deacons were ordained on July 20. They are Reverends James Anthony A. del Rosario, Richard D.C. Omol, Carlos C. Ida, Kennedy A. Neral and Joey C. Enriquez. Congratulations to all of you and looking forward to your ordination to the priesthood.

Congratulations to the organizers and pilgrims of the World Youth Day (WYD) 2013 held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The organizers said 3.5 million pilgrims took part in the event led by His Holiness Pope Francis. This is his first foreign trip since he was elected Pope by the Conclave of Cardinals. Let us continue praying the Oratio Imperata and offer it not only for the lawyers arguing on the unconstitutionality of RH Law, but also for the Supreme Court Justices that the Holy Spirit may guide them in making their decision.
