Prelate calls for transparency in church

MANILA, February 15, 2009—A prelate has called for transparency not only in the government but also in the Catholic Church.

San Fernando Pampanga auxiliary bishop Roberto Mallari said this over an interview at Radio Veritas Friday.

“Magkakaroon ng higit na tiwala ang mga tao sa Simbahan at lalo pang magkaroon ng cooperation sa mga tao,” (People should have more confidence in the church so they will cooperate more) the 50-year old prelate said.

He underscored the need for the Catholic Church to account for the contributions and donations so “we have to make use of them for the good of our people.”

He added it is important for the Church to gain the trust and confidence of the faithful for them to appreciate the services being given them through their contributions and donations.

He said there are a number of concerns being addressed by parishes and dioceses.

“The basics of good manners and right conduct are learned from the family,” he said as he underscored the need for parents to know the importance of basic education in the Filipino home.

He said it is in the home where children are first taught of transparency and the need for one to be transparent.

“The more transparent we are, the more people will appreciate what we’re doing and they would even volunteer their services for the programs,” Mallari concluded. (Melo M. Acuna)
