MANILA, January 28, 2009—About 2,000 Catholic youth will meet from November 23-27, 2009 in Cavite for the Asian Youth Day with delegates coming from South, Central, East and Southeast Asia and the Philippines.
CBCP Episcopal Commission on Youth and Masbate Bishop Joel Z. Baylon said the activity is jointly sponsored by the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences, the CBCP Commission on Youth and the Diocese of Imus under Bishop Luis Antonio G. Tagle, DD.
“The Asian Youth Day is held every three years since it began in Thailand in 1999,” Bishop Baylon told CBCPNews.
He added the succeeding assemblies were held in Taiwan in 2001, India in 2003 and Hongkong in 2006.
This year’s theme for the gathering is “Celebrating the Eucharist.”
He added the event is the regional counterpart of the World Youth Day which was last held in Australia last year.
“We’re independent of their theme and programs because it is the FABC that sponsors and organizes the event,” the prelate said.
It was learned a thousand delegates will come from across Asia while another thousand delegates will come from the various archdioceses, dioceses, prelatures and vicariates in the Philippines. (Melo M. Acuna)
