Camarines climate change summit to talk on global warming

NAGA CITY, June 22, 2008--The Camarines Sur Climate Change Summit which will be held next month is expected to create awareness among the people of the ill-effects of global warming and consider workable alternatives to lessen its impact.

This was learned from Caceres Auxiliary Bishop Jose Rojas, Jr. and lead convener and Chairman of the said summit. Bishop Rojas was recently named Bishop of the Prelature of Libmanan.

A meeting presided by Rojas was held this week at the Immaculate Conception Parish Church, together with the other conveners after he formally accepted the task to be the summit head.

“This initiative is timely and relevant as many of our people today still take for granted and are unaware of the possible catastrophe which nature can bring and the things which we can do individually or collectively so we may be able to give our share in addressing the problem,” environment enthusiast Julian Lavadia, Jr. said after the meeting with Bishop Rojas.

This whole day affair set on July 29, 2008 will be held at the St. Peter Baptist Hall at the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary. Participants will come from the cross section of the community.

Expected to speak at the event is Energy Secretary Angelo Tomas Reyes, former Environment and Natural Resources Secretary and concurrent chairman of the Task Force on Climate Change.

Among the local conveners supporting Bishop Rojas are Sister Asuncion Evidente, D.C., President of the Universidad de Santa Isabel, weather scientist Michael Padua of Naga College Foundation and representatives from the civic, business and media sectors.

“With the support and cooperation of the different sectors in the Province of Camarines Sur, the Summit is expected to deliver what it has envisioned especially in bringing awareness so that an action plan may be drawn based on what has been outlined by this initiative,” summit secretary-general Father Granwell Pitabit said.
