‘Eco campaign’ among youth candidates urged

MANILA, Sept. 3, 2010—As another campaign period begins, a green group has called on barangay and youth council candidates to “campaign simply and ecologically.”

Roy Alvarez, President of the EcoWaste Coalition, said candidates should “set a good example in green leadership and governance through campaigning simply and ecologically.”

CBCP renews appeal for Pakistan flood victims

MANILA, Sept.2, 2010—The Catholic Bishops’ of the Philippines humanitarian arm is seeking urgent assistance for flood-stricken Pakistan.

In a statement, Caritas Filipinas made a public appeal for solidarity and assistance for around 20 million people affected by flooding.

The flooding that began in late July has claimed an estimated 2,000 lives and about 2 million people homeless.

Palo launches vocations campaign

TACLOBAN CITY, Sept.2, 2010—The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Palo is promoting religious vocations with a campaign that includes going to various schools.

The archdiocese launched the campaign yesterday as church officials kicked off its month-long observance of the Vocation Month.

Vatican names new rector of Collegio Filippino

MANILA, Sept. 2, 2010—The Vatican has confirmed the appointment of Father Gregory Ramon Gaston as the next rector of the Pontificio Collegio Filippino in Rome.

The Congregation of the Catholic Education (for Seminaries and Educational Institutions) announced the appointment of the priest who has been assigned since 2008 at the Holy Apostles Senior Seminary in Makati City.

Bishop slams 25 months of bonus in MWSS

MANILA, Sept. 1, 2010— A Catholic bishop criticized reports that officials of water utility MWSS received P384 million in bonuses and allowances last year.

Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes said the excessive salaries and benefits of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System’s employees is an abuse that must be investigated.
